Five children are working individually to make figures out of clay. Ari holds her figure up to the camera. The teacher asks an identification question: “What is it, Ari?” Ari answers, “Snowman.” Ari looks at her clay figure for a moment and says, “It’s a snowlady.” Her joyful dance seems to indicate her awareness that she has done something special. Next, the teacher asks a function question: “What does she do?” Ari rubs the bottom of her snow lady as she answers, “I am trying to make her….,” but she does not finish her sentence. Susan holds her figure up to the camera. Ari and Susan move their figures together briefly as if they are dancing. In both instances, the children are reading their invented symbols. The female clothing (bikini top) that Ari adds to her generic snowman reminds her that she has made a “snow lady.”Susan and Ari treat each other’s snow figures as characters capable of interacting.
