Four girls have decided to transform themselves into vampires by making paper teeth. One may wonder why the girls chose a relatively small symbol (teeth) instead of something like a large, black cape. The girls understand that the teeth, especially sharp teeth, are iconic symbols for vampires. Later, the children discuss how to further enhance their symbol by adding pink or red to the white teeth. The girls decide to“color them red like we’ve been sucking someone’s blood.” To extend their representation, one girl suggests they also adopt the character of a vampire by talking “in mean voices.” Another girl models by speaking in a low voice tone as she says, “I’m gonna suck your blood.” Their conversation helps us learn that the girls truly have chosen a symbol they believe captures the essence of what they know about vampires. In addition, we learn that they are thinking about how their symbol will be read by others: “And our teeth are gonna be scary and we’re gonna growl at people…”
