In this video we see how a three-year-old girl uses her body to represent different qualities of music through dance. She begins by distancing herself from the camera and engaging in a series of interesting arm movements. She has a sense of herself as a performer, entertaining an audience. Observe how she marks the change of rhythm with different patterns of footwork. When the music bridges to an upbeat piano run she stands in place and does more than step from side to side in time to the music. She steps to the right, then adds a little half-bounce jiggle, steps to the left, and again adds a half-bounce jiggle. The jiggles punctuate the upbeat, add expressivity to her movements, and “frame” these movements as dance. That is, the accents are beyond the functional requirements of balance and leverage. They are added for fun and for show. Marvel at how she is able to continuously mark the tempo of the music while fluidly progressing through a combination of different movements: from jumping while moving her arms in a windmill pattern, to hopping like frog, to executing a creative floorwork routine.
