In this video, toddlers receive help from their teacher when negotiating turns to swing on a large bag. Brooke declares she would like a turn by saying, “Five minutes, Shelby. Five minutes. Five minutes now!” Brooke knows that time can be measured in units, but she does not yet understand what quantity of time is represented by, “five minutes.” Shelby wants to continue her turn and says, “No.” The teacher says, “How about let’s count one to ten,” and the children agree. The counting strategy lends structure to the game, and soon more children join. As they participate, the children illustrate an understanding that games include rules, turns involve both active and waiting periods, and time can be measured in standard intervals. Later, the teacher works to integrate Caden into the rotation by asking Brooke if he can have a turn. Notice that the teacher honors Brooke’s answer.
