By using parallel cue sticks to build a ramp, Ben creates an unconventional way to get the balls into a hole. Uncle George and Ben talk about how to aim so that the balls roll into the pocket. Ben asks why the balls all go to the same place instead of random places. He cannot see any reason why they should end a roll together. He has reached a developmental milestone in realizing some hidden constraint is guiding the balls (e.g. the angle off the rail equals the angle hitting the rail). As the game proceeds, listen to Ben answer questions by showing “how” something is done rather than explaining “why” it happens. At this age (3 years) children believe that showing an effect explains the cause, as if to say, “See, this happens.”
