In this short clip, three four-year-old children spontaneously subtask their efforts to fill an ice tray with water and carry it to the freezer. The transcript in the Appendix speculates on what the children might be thinking (the “subtext”). Once you enter their world of plausible thoughts, you realize how complex, wonderful, and generative play can be for young children. Protect these moments to offer children the opportunity to invent their own strategies for getting things done. Do this not only out of respect for children’s autonomy, but also out of your desire to understand how children think.
