Eight boys wonder about what some construction workers are building across from the entrance to their school. To help the children relate to this new event, the teacher encourages the boys to problem solve how they can learn what the construction workers are doing. Observe how this activity encourages the children to make inferences about the goals and intentions of other people. Notice that the children assume the construction workers’ digging is purposeful. Listen as the children share their theories about what the workers are doing. Learn what the children understand about the perspectives and experiences of others, as they share comments like, “He can’t hear you.” Gain further insight about the children’s world knowledge as they evaluate an alternate means of gathering the information they seek.
