Notice the effects that are created when light is cast on a corner that is half mirror and half wall. The “shadow” doubles in the corner of the room when the mirror reflects it. A corner with two painted walls would angle the shadow on the second wall. When the boy raises one arm both the shadow arm and reflected shadow arm rise, making it appear as though he has raised both arms. The presence of the mirror may influence the child to treat the shadow more as his own body. Similar to when the child sees his reflection in a mirror, he may recognize the shadow as his own and want to make it do something interesting. In this setup, also note that the light is positioned far from the wall. The distance of the light from the wall makes it possible for the children to create exaggeratedly large shadows. Notice how the large ball invites the child to relate to the mirror. Without actually going over the ball or into the mirror, the boy lunges on the ball toward the mirror as if he desires to watch his face growing larger.
