Moveable gym mats allow children to control the level of difficulty in their invented games. The floor is smooth, and the mats are not heavy. The ramp adds drama and a sense of challenge to their exercise. The children read the ramp side as “to climb up” and the edge (cliff) as “to jump off.” If a carpet covered the floor instead of the mats, the children would not take the same risks. If only a single floor mat were placed against the wall, their possibilities would be limited. The two floor mats invite the children to make the gap a little wider in increments as part of their pretense of jumping over a chasm.
