The essence of scientific thinking is clearly captured as 11 children, five years of age, engage in disciplined inquiry by working together to retrieve a plastic soda bottle from the other side of a chain link fence. The children invent possible solutions, test them out, and as they learn new information about how the physical world works, fluidly make new predictions about how to retrieve the bottle. The group works as a team with a lead scientist. They use fingers, feet, a rubber hose, but most essentially, their minds.
