Despite all these complexities, hundreds of teachers I have met are persisting in the challenge of creating a meaningful, relevant approach to their work. They bring the skills of empathy, emotional intelligence and executive functioning to the children in their care. Even when saddled with a required curriculum teachers learn to hone their own improvisational skills; they address learning outcome mandates with an emergent approach to engaging children with relevant curriculum. Teachers are recognizing that working with anti-bias goals is not an add-on curriculum, but rather a lens through which they view all their curriculum planning. And they are mobilizing courage to step into uncomfortable encounters to enhance their own learning and build cross cultural relationships with mutual respect.
