Gender identity is who we are inside and how we name our gender. This also expands beyond the binary. Although most of us have been taught that there are only two genders, boy and girl, there are actually many genders. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “‘gender identity is one’s internal sense of who one is, which results from a multifaceted interaction of biological traits, developmental influences and environmental conditions. It may be male, female, somewhere in between, a combination of both or neither (i.e., not conforming to a binary conceptualization of gender). Self-recognition of gender identity develops over time, much the same way as a child’s physical body does. For some people, gender identity can be fluid, shifting in different contexts”
