The terms gender nonconforming or gender fluid are sometimes used to describe adults and children who do not follow the stereotypical gender roles regarding clothing, color preferences, or toy and activity choices. Some children do not feel exactly like boys or girls and may express that feeling to parents, teachers, or other children at a young age. When children are insistent, persistent, and consistent in expressing gender differences, their feelings may be an indication of gender nonconformity, rather than a phase or creative play (Schools in Transition, 2015; Henig, 2017).
