Like most people I know in ECE, I would love to see as many men as there are women working in classrooms of our youngest children, but I hold no such hope or expectation. The barriers are simply too large to overcome without years of dedicated and focused attention by governments, both state and federal, by colleges and universities, and frankly, by the general population that still believes it is women’s work. However, let us note that while we are working to attract more men to ECE, we have a strong and energetic workforce in place right now, and with the proper training they can learn the differences in the needs of our boys as well as the girls, and recognize that these needs are different, the energy levels are different, and the amount of noise and physical play will likely exceed those of their female classmates.
