Our childhood play memories remind us of what is important for children. As Bhutan continuously explores ways to contextualize early childhood care and development, we need to consider carefully what that will be like. We want to create a “Made in Bhutan” model that is in tune with our beliefs, values, culture and identity. At the Rinpung ECCD Centre, Paro College of Education, we have the autonomy to develop our own programs with our own research. It seems most appropriate to utilize the work of our own scholars. Tshering Wangmo’s doctoral research, “Examining ‘funds of knowledge’ as pre-primary children transition from home to school in Bhutan: In the context of ‘Educating for Gross National Happiness’,” identified seven repositories of knowledge that a child brings to preschool from home. Her work provides us with a new lens and a vision for early childhood care and development that harnesses the best from the child’s virtual bag (Thomson & Hall, 2008). It helps us build bridges between home, school, community and a culturally appropriate program.
