When I think of the early childhood community, I can only think of a lively, robust, and enchanting group of thought leaders, change-makers, and individuals who bring their hearts, values, soul, and authenticity to their work. Early care and education is a space of shared perspectives, endless stories, and strength. Children exhibit a natural love for inquiry. Teachers cultivate a spirit of reimagining and resilience.
As architects, building equity-based messages and social justice-themed outcomes to enhance the lives of young children, educators are motivated when embraced by their community and village. The African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” bellows loudly when I think of our quest in our community for equity and shared vision, and how to maintain our resilience in our fight for change in our field. Young children are the catalyst in helping the early childhood education community foster a sense of belonging and determination. Children, even more resilient than adults, help us foster this foundation. Children and families deserve the best of us, and we need to give it to them. As a practitioner, leader, and individual whose work promotes equity-minded individuals, I take responsibility for helping to lead such conversations.
