Approximately one in 12 children has difficulty learning language, otherwise known as Developmental Language Disorder. That is, they have difficulty communicating their needs and telling stories with words and sentences. Though DLD is a common communication disorder, there is little public awareness. This is likely because until recently the disorder had no agreed upon name, and there have been few people devoted to public awareness. In the past, the disorder was referred to as specific language impairment, language learning impairment, language disorder, or was referred to by even more medically-based terms such as childhood aphasia.
