Be the Change
Service is the very purpose of life. It is the rent we pay for living on the planet.
– Marian Wright Edelman
Popular author and Ted Talk speaker, Simon Sinek, believes that “leadership is not about being in charge. Leadership is about taking care of those in your charge.”
In the book, The Art of Leadership: Cultivating Curriculum in Early Childhood Classrooms, Elizabeth Beavers and Donna Kirkwood contributed a section called, “Be the Change You Wish to See in Your Program.” One of the tools the authors believe will help a leader be able to support others is self-reflection, if it’s used in an intentional way.
They write, “According to the literature, reflection is an ‘inner dialogue with oneself,’ in which an individual examines his or her experiences, beliefs, perceptions in a way that transforms both thinking and practices.” Learning to use self-reflection effectively, they believe, can help us inspire positive change – first within ourselves and then within our programs.
