Educating for Democracy
Democracy is a process, not a static condition. It is becoming, rather than being. It can easily be lost, but never is fully won. Its essence is eternal struggle.
– Federal Judge William H. Hastie
A new feature of the Exchange Website called “Educating for Democracy” can be found under the Reimagining Our Work (ROW) section. It is the current work being done by people who are interested in what it means to reimagine the early care and education field.
Here you will find posted Ann Pelo and Margie Carter’s “Call to Action,” which encourages today’s education community to support a pedagogy that helps children become grounded in the principles and practices undergirding a strong democracy. You will also find examples of ways early childhood educators have been answering the call. And you will note a “Submission” button that invites you to share examples of how you are educating for democracy through your work.
Yesterday’s EED described “moral injury,” a term coined by the mental health industry that describes how people feel when they must deal with policies and practices beyond their control that violate their values. The Educating for Democracy website section offers a way to take action and focus on positive change.
