Equity & STEAM (Satisfaction, transformation, empowerment, activism, motivation)

In this month of great satisfaction and student academic achievements, I have had the honor of witnessing equity actions supported by our Code of Ethics and the fundamental principles of Anti-Bias Education through an arduous march of activism.

A group of apprentices from the College of Marin, in the San Francisco Bay Area, graduated with their Associate Teacher certificate awarded by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, empowered by taking their classes in Spanish to become teachers and professionals with paid jobs.

These students, led by Peggy Dodge, ECEPTS and me, persisted through academic challenges compounded by economic hardship, plus language and cultural barriers. These challenges are increased by the lack of technological knowledge, lack of employment, and feelings of guilt for not being able to fulfill their family responsibilities due to lack of sufficient income.

These 34 ECE students achieved their goals with great motivation, by developing a sense of identity, confidence, and family pride while celebrating their human diversity, the sense of integrity and justice by obtaining the knowledge that empowered them to defend themselves and others. All these skills are necessary for success and educational transformation, both on a personal level and in the transformation that will be shared with the children and families they serve in the work and educational field of which they are already a fundamental and inspirational piece.

We extend our congratulations to these and all students graduating, and our gratitude to those, like Peggy Dodge, who are retiring this year after a lifetime of service and advocacy in our field.
