Hey Dad, You Matter!

Parents need to fill a child’s bucket of self-esteem so high that the rest of the world can’t poke enough holes to drain it dry
– Alvin Price, educator & author

Developed in Collaboration with Brandy D. James, PhD, Developmental Therapist and Co-Author of Stories of Resistance.

Black Fathers of Children with Disabilities, We see you. We see the challenges you face as fathers, trying to advocate for your children in a world that places all the responsibility of care on mothers. We see you, at doctors’ appointments, physical therapy, and schools, battling multiple stereotypes to receive adequate care and recognition. We see you, at work, trying to advocate for yourself to get the time you need to care for your child in surgery season or to manage frequent early pick-ups.

“Hey, Dad, You Matter: Share Your Story!” is a collective, and project centering your experiences. This project seeks to collect and celebrate the stories of Black/African American fathers caring for children with disabilities. The book project is running now until March 2025. To sign up, share with someone you know, and learn more, you can view our flyer.

Every caregiver has a story, and the stories of Black fathers of children with disabilities deserve our attention and support.
