Leaders Must Be Brave When Advocating for Play

“Be brave in the face of pressure…leading with play takes courage, writes Karen Foster-Jorgensen in her most recent Exchange column, “Building Joyful Organizations.” She also presented similar encouragement to leaders during the recent Protecting Play online conference. She describes pressures leaders face to:
- align with academic standards;
- meet assessment benchmarks;
- prepare children for kindergarten.
But she urges leaders to resist the urge to move to more structure and less play.
“Research is on our side,” she writes. “Children who learn through play demonstrate stronger language skills, better self-regulation, and deeper conceptual understanding (Weinberg et al., 2016).”
