Nature Connections: The Roots of Love of Learning
The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction.
– Rachel Carson (1907 – 1964), American writer, conservationist
During this week of Earth Day and Arbor Day, Martina B. Albright, in her article, “Time in Nature: The Roots of Love of Learning,” reminds us that, “Fostering a connection to the outdoors is an ideal way for young children to learn…When children are outside, their senses are attuned to noises, smells and touch in a different way than when they are indoors, where the environment is often overstimulating.”
Albright’s article is part of the Exchange Essentials collection, Learning in Nature, which provides a wealth of information and inspiration for supporting children’s connections with nature.
Another helpful resource is an upcoming live online workshop from Nature Explore, designed to help educators discover ways to support children’s self-regulation, wellbeing and resilience through powerful connections with nature.
And here’s another quote from Rachel Carson, perhaps even more relevant today than when she wrote it years ago:
“We in this generation, must come to terms with nature, and I think we’re challenged as mankind has never been challenged before to prove our maturity and our mastery, not of nature, but of ourselves.”
