Working With Ourselves: Key to Working With Families

Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.
– Fred Rogers

In the Turn-Key DVD, Inspiring Practices for Partnering with Families, Luis Hernandez asserts that:
“Our field is not just children. Our field is about children and families. We really have to keep that perspective on all the time. All the research indicates that school success is really about family success. If I’m going to be a successful teacher, I’ve got to be able to have a degree of success with each individual family…”
He explains that when he is working with families where he might have “judgment and difficulties…I probably have to do a little self-work first, to see how I can change my own attitude about them.”
