Because I had figured out how to get my seat at the table (even if it meant bringing my own), it was my responsibility to help others find theirs.
– Alyssa Mwenelupembe
In the introduction to the beautiful book,
Stories of Resistance, Alyssa Mwenelupembe describes a number of times when she was made to feel unwelcome in various work places because of the color of her skin. Then she writes, “Somehow, I took these experiences…to make me strong.” She explains how, over time, she learned ways to ensure that she “has a seat at the table,” a place in her chosen profession, the early care and education field.
This book grew from an invitation Alyssa Mwenelupembe made to eleven other Black women who have also found their seats. She asked them to tell their stories so others might learn from them. Some are already accomplished writers; some are writing for the first time. Each story is unique and holds a valuable lesson.
Mwenelupembe also makes this invitation to all readers: “It is my hope that you find inspiration in these stories that you can take into your own life. And that some of you, who may already have seats at the table, might move over and make room for a new person to join you.”
