Celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8

I can promise you that women working together – linked, informed and educated – can bring peace and prosperity to this forsaken planet.
– Isabel Allende, Chilean and American writer

“Here is this monument to women’s work, to the labor that is uncelebrated, to the mothers and grandmothers who baked pies, and cooked and sowed but yet are never thanked, the labor that is endless,” says Liza Lou, a contemporary American artist best known for her large-scale sculptures, including “Kitchen”—a replica of a kitchen intricately covered in glass beads (1991-1996).

In her book Illuminating Care, Carol Garboden Murray highlights Lou and artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles whose work was transformed by her efforts to blend the labors of motherhood and art. Garboden Murray writes, “These artists shine a light on key feminist insights—that the socially necessary care work of our society is ignored or devalued. Both of these artist pioneers have been exhibited around the world and given us unique perspectives for analyzing care as an art form.”

March 8 is International Women’s Day, a day to consider and perhaps reframe the role of women and “women’s work.” One place to do that is in the World Forum Global Café, which is hosting an open conversation. Hosts Bonnie and Roger Neugebauer invite you to “Come! Bring your friends and daughters and co-workers and sisters and mothers and special men in your life of all ages. Join us in WoFo Global Café for a conversation about what women can, must, have done and will do to change the world. This is a safe space to explore the potential of female energy for all humans. Prepare to share: a personal story about courage you have witnessed or experienced, quotes, music, photos, art—whatever you might choose. There will be joy.”

The event is March 8 at 11 am eastern (NY). Register to receive the link.
