Inspiring Children’s Love of Science Learning

Close observation of children at play suggests that they find out about the world in the same way as scientists find out about new phenomena and test new ideas…during this exploration, all the senses are used to observe and draw conclusions about objects and events through simple, scientific investigations.

Inspiring an Early Passion for Science: The Impact of Hands-on Activities on Children’s Motivation” by Melek Merve Yilmaz, Ali Bekirler and Ayperi Dikici Sigirtmac is an article on the Sage Journals website about a research study on what motivates young children to enjoy science learning.

The article abstract states that, “The results obtained from the study show that children’s science motivation can be shaped through hands-on activities,” and that “the children’s early motivational beliefs about science predict their participation in primary school and their future academic interest.”

The fairly new Exchange Essentials, Science Learning in the Early Years, is a collection of articles with delightful titles such as:

  • All We Need Is A Measuring Tape, Water, and Worms by Diann Gano; and
  • Playful Science Activities for Young Children by Cathy Meredith and Satomi Izumi-Taylor; and
  • The Lizard Ate My Cricket: Live Action Science for the ECE Classroom by Sharon Arias and Shareen Abramson Fruend

This collection has been developed to support early childhood administrators and educators in engaging in the kinds of enjoyable hands-on science activities that motivate young children’s interest in science in later years.
