The Childhood Obesity Epidemic: How the Early Childhood Field Can Help

Some things you have to do every day. Eating seven apples on Saturday night instead of one a day just isn’t going to get the job done.

“There has been a global increase in the average body mass index (BMI) in children and an alarming trend of increasing weight among the youngest children in recent decades.” So proclaims an article by Joanna Szczyrska on the National Library of Medicine website.

“Childhood excess weight and obesity result in premature adult mortality and morbidity… Taking effective anti-obesity measures in children, both preventive and therapeutic, is now a necessity, with successful interventions used to decrease body weight and thus reduce health consequences.”

In order to help educators and families support children’s healthy habits and combat obesity, Exchange is offering significantly reduced pricing on “Preventing Obesity and Promoting Wellness in Early Childhood Settings,” a DVD series featuring 14 interactive sessions offering insights from over 80 experts in pediatrics, nutrition, movement, child development, and adult education, as well as scenes of appropriate practice gathered from over 30 innovative early childhood classrooms across the country.
