Join Patrick Makokoro and Karen Foster-Jorgensen for an Engaging Exchange Conversation
The human heart is the first home of democracy. It is where we embrace our questions. Can we be equitable? Can we be generous? Can we listen with our whole beings, not just our minds, and offer our attention rather than our opinions? And do we have enough resolve in our hearts to act courageously, relentlessly, without giving up—ever—trusting our fellow citizens to join with us in our determined pursuit of a living democracy?

“I’ve come to think of leadership as a rhythm rather than a race—something that flows, flexes, and invites joy even in the midst of daily demands,” writes Karen Foster-Jorgensen in “Building Joyful Organizations,” her column featured regularly in Exchange Community Voices. Join Karen on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, from 2-3:30 Eastern (US) Time, when she and Patrick Makokora discuss ideas of cultivating joy and mutual support.
Patrick’s first of a series of articles for Exchange Community Voices, features wisdom he gained from elders as he was growing up in Zimbabwe, Southern Africa.
He quotes his father describing to young Patrick the importance of cultivating relationships of mutual support:
“My children when you are in a difficult situation it is always important to find a trusted friend or two who you can work with to resolve your situation. In fact, my dear children, when you are walking in quicksand in the village, make sure you are journeying with someone so that when you feel like you are sinking, there is a person close by to assist you, hold your hand and bring you to safety.”
Join Patrick and Karen to hear about their personal and professional journeys and their thoughts on building resilience to help us negotiate these challenging times. They would love to hear your ideas and questions.
