What We Appreciate in Teachers
One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world
– Malala Yousafzai, Pakistani activist and youngest Nobel Laureate
Thanks to all of you who shared about a teacher who inspired you! Your stories shed light on the important impact all of those who work with young children have on those around them—children, families, colleagues. We are grateful to each one of you.
Margie Carter is inspiring! “She listens deeply, respectful and inspiring with her replies and offers interesting and thought provoking open ended provocative questions. She is kind and compassionate.” —Anonymous, Nova Scotia
Mr. Griggs Irving was kind. “…I was a curious free-spirit whom he encouraged rather than trying to contain me. He was patient, gentle, and listened to each unique child. He appreciated my artistic efforts, and taught me how to ‘see’ in order to draw. I was inspired be present for children – for all people – in those ways.” —Ursla Costin, Kent, CT
Elsie Jones was encouraging. “Ms. Jones always made me feel worthwhile and able to do anything. She assumed I was an interesting capable 2nd grader. She set me in a path to success and love of education…She was nonjudgemental. I have dedicated my life to helping students grow and succeed in life as a teacher myself.” —Anonymous
Elizabeth (Betty) Jones was PLAY-full! “Betty taught me how to engage adult learners as active participants. She was my student advisor…and became my thesis chair. We shared a fascination with how to best support young children (and all learners) with a love of music in their lives and in our own!” —Anonymous
Doris Daniels was loving and inspiring. “My mother was my first teacher. I was adopted as a toddler…She was a pre-k teacher, and I would always make my way to her classroom every day until she decided I might as well stay with her…She is ultimately the reason I returned to Early Childhood as a profession in my 30s and has cheered me through every educational milestone. She passed last year, but I’ll be earning my PhD next year for her.” —Shawna Daniels, Raleigh, NC
