In my preschool teaching, I (Abe) have always highlighted seasonal changes, but after my encounter with that vibrant patch of moss, I began exploring how to align more closely with the subtle shifts in nature. This curiosity led me to explore phenology, the study of seasonal cycles, which I sensed could deepen our center’s efforts to connect children with the natural world. Through the lens of early childhood development, phenology nurtures children’s curiosity by encouraging authentic inquiry and reflection, allowing them to engage meaningfully with nature in a developmentally appropriate way.
